Aol update messed up win xp

my dad automatically received the latest aol update as he was signing off last night, today he could not click on aol at all, so he tried system restore - no restore points - so he did system recovery - it gets to the the very ast blue screen where you can cick finish and freezes on that blue screen that says thank you

I think we need to know how he did a system recovery and by what means

System recovery might mean something different.

Generally speaking, he ought to start the system recovery over

F8 on start up gives 3 options safe mode
safe mode command prompt and system restore - (windows)
no cds were put in

let me correct my last post - system resote would not work no restore points it said system recovery, windows would attempt to recover itself
