I was wondering if there is any way that I could set up a serveillance camera and be able to access it from my laptop. This would be done in a legal setting but I don't know what I would need or how to do it. Thank you in advance.

The answer is yes, but I don't know all the details. There are systems which have a network connection and you can access the video remotely, but those are expensive (I setup a system and investigated the different systems, but used a cheaper unit without a network connection).

I have also seen software for Linux systems.

I suspect if you search for webcam software you will find what you are looking for.
