Hi. For a while now, every time I start the computer and just before it load windows, a message line (DOS like) advise me that there is insufficient memory. Then Windows loads as expected and runs within my expectations, as I am able to run all of my programmes. But, my resources at the very start, even before I open any programme, are at around 50% free. As soon as I use programmes like MSOffice or IE or anything (e.g. Chessmaster 10th Edition), such resources drop to the point that a message comes up suggesting to close some programmes...Inssuficient Memory! Can anyone shed a light on an old issue. Thank you

Sounds like some sort of infection clogging your system.

Please go to the Malware Forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the Start Here

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself...then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum. Be patient, the Malware Forum is a very busy place and a two or three day wait is not unusual. DO NOT REPLY TO OR BUMP YOUR OWN LOG. If it shows a reply it may be overlooked as one that is being worked on.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

Thank you for the prompt answer. I have just (last night) gone through a battery of scans, clean-ups and removal of unwanted items and I belive to be clean of most evils. Any ideas?

You would still be better off posting the HiJack This log, you would be very surprised what is hidden in your system.

The malware experts on here will ferret them out for you and it really is the first step to fixing your problem.

Hi. As I mentioned before, I have just gone through the entire procedure to clean the system. You may want to take a quick look at the thread under "mafome" in the Malware Forum. But as you suggested it, find below the HJT log of a few minutes ago. Thank you for your help.

My apologies, I did not realise you had already done that.

First of I would like to see what you have on your system.

Start/
run/
type dxdiag/
hit ok/

Press the save info button and attach the log to your next post please.

Ok for a start your ram is a little low, but not at a critical level for a 98 system.

Can you go into

control panel/
system/
hardware tab/

tell me if there are any yellow ! or ?

You have several DirecX files that are causing a few problems.

Go here and download this

Its designed to monitor ram usage and also free up your ram so even thou your working with a small amount you should always have what you need for a specific process.

My only other suggestion would be install more ram.

I have a new sim which I have been planning to install. I'll make the effort.

My original question still remains. Why is it that I get a message at loading time, just after DOSKey Installed, then Inssuficient Memory, then Code Page Not Prepared?

Your getting that message because you have more processes running/trying to start than your ram can handle.

You can also if you want to limit this follow these instructions.

start/
run/
type msconfig/
click ok

Click start up tab/
put a check mark in anything you recognise and think you don't need. For instance microsoft office, which is not a essential startup option.

IMPORTANT Do not uncheck anything you do not recognise

Thank you. I'll start by upgrading the memory and run the small application. I'll have to do some reading to understand what each of the application names are in the start list, then I may start removing the check mark.

Anyway, I am considering moving to WIN2000

Thank you for your time
