Is there any history of rogue employees from ISP’s downloading malicious software onto customers’ computers which prevents the computer accessing all dial up accounts?
The first instance happened after the ISP rang me asking me if I wanted to upgrade my dial up account to broadband and I said no. A few days later, my laptop would no longer connect to any dial up account, and has not been able to for over a year.
More recently, on 7 February I rang the same ISP to cancel my dial up account, as I have ordered Broadband from another provider (which is not yet installed). I was advised that my dial up account was due to run until 3 March. The following day, I am unable to access the dial up account or any dial up account from my main computer. Coincidence? I use firewall software (no luck even when I switch it off) and have run anti-virus checks but have found nothing. I am able to access when I use an old harddrive and switch off cookies.

Hope someone is able to help.

Thanks for your advice DeSade. I have now tried Winsock on both the laptop (WinXP) and the Desktop (Win98SE) and am still unable to connect to the internet by dial up on either.

Hi SamJay,

Is there any history of rogue employees from ISP’s downloading malicious software onto customers’ computers which prevents the computer accessing all dial up accounts?

To my knowledge, no. However, there's a first time for everything. So, let's check it out --

Please download HijackThis. Run it and perform a scan -- please save and post the information from the log into your next reply.

Please also generate an Uninstall List --
To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.
Thanks,
Dan.

Hi SamJay,

I can't see any malicous programs on your computer, however if you want an Expert's opinion, then you could always post your log here.

Are you still having problems with your connection? If you restart your computer into Safe Mode with Networking, are you able to connect?

Please goto Start --> Run --> type EVENTVWR and press OK --> Now, look under the System log for any errors and/or warnings. If you find any, please post the relevant heading, along with the details inside by double clicking on the error/warning, and then copy/pasting the information from within.

Thanks,
Dan.
