Win XP fails to open .exe files, open/save files..

Well.. as from today, my XP SP1 cannot open several .exe files, open or save files using a variety of programs like Paint and Word, crashes during Disk Cleanup and Windows Update, fails to load Task Manager (the icon appears in the Taskbar but doesn't animate, and nothing happens when I click it), etcetera.

All this time, no error messages are given! I have not installed recent hardware, have rebooted, have tried reinstalling Office XP, and have even System Restore-d, but to no avail..

..Please, help.. I'm going nuts :help: You guys are my last hope before I'm forced to format!
