Do you have a valid XP cd?

If so, place it in your CD ROM drive and follow the instructions below

Start > Run > cmd then type

sfc /scannow (note the space)

let this run untill you get a message saying it is complete.

SFC - system file checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If you want to see what was replaced, right click My Computer > manage, expand event viewer > system.

I got all the way up to copying the files out of the snapshot folder.. there was no snapshot folder to be found. I was in safe mode when I did that. I rebooted earlier today to try the Repair and now it's not letting me back into safe mode.

ok well. I went into RC and it put me in the C:\ directory. When I do a 'dir' it says " an error occured during directory enumeration"

so I tried to go to c:\windows and it says "the path or file specified is not valid."

*sigh* I really really really don't want this data to go away. There's some important things on there.

oh and chkdsk didn't find any errors on the other machine.

seems like rc can't find the windows install directory...which would explain why a repair wasn't being allowed
