ati rage/rage ll problems

first of all ... hello and nice informative forum you have here. well to the problem. i run win 98 with pent mmx 200mhz chip with ati rage/ rage ll ( ati-m64 ) vid card and when i go to paint program all my darker colors are black( ie purple navy etc. are black) i gone to control panel and display setting are set to 32bit true color . any help would be apprieciated thank in advance.
