DUNS ERROR [bleep]

OK, I am ready to dynamite my computer. I had a USR modem that died after many years, at least I think I did. It isn't generating noise touch tones loud enough to trigger the phone.
So, I went out and bought a Bestdata USBP 56k v.92 dialup modem. Now I can't get on line. The computer sees the modem, and the modem dials. I even was able to register on Earthlink, but now when I call I get "Authentication Notify" with their Total Access software. I tried it from the Windows 2000 dialup location and I even tried it on a separate computer and got the same response DUNS error 721 among others.
I tried modem diagnostics and I got a response from the modem. At this point I decided to post here. I have gone into everything I can think of and I have an inch thick stack of self help from Earthlink. HELP ME. (Oh, I'm writing from another computer).

first question:

do you have to use their total access software--in my limited experience with it, I found it to be total crap.

You can set up a phone number manually with earthlink...try that first

No, as a matter of fact I was getting no information from the Total Access software. So, I quit using it and went to the W2K dialer. That is where I began to get the DUNS errors. Here is the modem log. It has to be a setting with the modem or a protocol issue. I'm thinking that the modem isn't waiting long enough for a response from the server. Anyway, help on this would be appreciated.

Did you actually install the drivers that came with this thing, or did you just plug it in and saw the modem popped up and thought, OK, it is working?

What is the model number of this modem, they have two usb modems

I ask because the driver I am looking at that i downloaded from their website and the one you are using do not appear to be the same driver.

I stuck the disk in and used the quick install instructions listed in the manual section. Also, the modem was able to connect with Earthlink and it was able to download the subscriber information from their site. That said, what driver should I be using?

download the above driver, and then go to MODEMS in device manager and click update...direct windows to the download, rather than letting it search

Thanks, I'll give it a try tonight. Last night I tried loading the driver and I think I got the right one from the CD, and that may be a little older. Also, I hooked in the terminal view, and it looks like there is alot of noise on the line. So I made this changed, S10-225. I think that I made every other possible change that I could, other than throwing the modem into the trash.

yes, well, line noise was my second guess...likely meaning your other modem was fine

You did have a fairly high connect speed 45,333kb---which is also an odd connection speed

Run an extension cord to a different phone jack...see if that works better
