I have a HP pavilion XL844 that was originally running ME. It started bogging down really bad, so I finally took the plunge and upgraded to XP home. I had to reinstall some software & drivers, but all in all I thought things went well except I never could get the HP3200 scanner to work after many attempts with many driver versions.
But then things started getting weird. The system would suddenly lock up when using the mouse - move, click, etc. I solved this by switching to a usb mouse. Then the system would just lock up upon booting. I solved this by selective startup in msconfig and deselecting some blank (??) entries. Finally, the system will lock up when running any type of virus scan. MS beta, Mcaffe, SpyBot, Adaware, I've tried them all. Locks up even in safe mode.
Do I have some sort of nasty virus or trojan? Corrupt registry? The only thing left I haven't tried is a XP system repair with the install discs. Will that do it?

Thanks,

Ohhbob

Please go to the malware forum in my signature and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE .

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.
