Windows 98 Display problem

Something happened that causes the display setting on my Win98 computer to stick at the lowest setting. I have gone into 'Control Panel', 'Display' etc. and tried to change the settings but it won't take! It seems to accept the change but doesn't do it! It ran for ages ok then for some reason this happened. I have searched for solutions and none seem to work.
