Help! I am a new user to Geeks to Go! I have read the forums and followed the steps to Malware Removal. While the frequency of explorer redirects seems reduced, it is still occurring. Thank you for your assistance in advance.

Hi 3stringer,

Welcome to geekstogo.com!

Download this tool called LSPFix from here:
http://www.cexx.org/LSPFix.exe

Save it to the same folder where hijackthis is and run it. Place a check mark in the I know what I'm doing checkbox, then move all instances of dolsp.dllover to the right hand column using the ">" icon. Be sure that ONLY the dolsp.dll file is listed in the right hand column. Once verified, click the Finish button.

Next, download this zip file:
http://lineofire.gee...It NT-2K-XP.zip

Extract the contents of the zip. It should automatically create a folder. Double-click on FindNarrator.bat. It will scan your computer and produce a log after a few minutes. Post that log back into this thread.

Also, did you set your homepage to http://www.gamesville.lycos.com by any chance?

OSC,

Thank you for your quick response.

I downloaded and ran LSPfix

Same with Findnarrator.bat EXCEPT when I run it, I see an MSDos window (log??) but it closes before I can get a copy of it's contents. [I] How do I get the log?

Also, a year or so ago, when I last used Netscape, I set the homepage to http://www.gamesville.lycos.com

I do not use it anymore tho. I use IExpl to browse.

Hi 3stringer,

That problem will happen if the files aren't extracted. Create a folder on your desktop called FindIt, then extract all the files in that zip to that folder. Then run findnarrator.bat. Lets see if that works. :tazz:

Hi 3stringer,

Please go here and run this free online virus scan:
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp

Delete whatever it finds.

Run hijackthis again, click Scan. Check the boxes next to these entries. Then close all windows except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to 'Fix checked'.

Configure your computer to show hidden files.

Then reboot your computer in safe mode and delete the following file: (if it's still there)

C:\WINDOWS\a64sddd.exe

Reboot your computer, run hijackthis again, save a fresh log and post it back into this thread.

Hi 3stringer,

That's great to here. :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

Thanks to PGPhantom for this canned speech.
