It may be. Check the Device Manager though and see if all the devices are installed properly. (Not marked with ! of ?)

Hold off on the Microsoft fix for a second...it has been known to lead to the dreaded mup.sys hang which is much more difficult to recover from.

Let's look at some driver issues and a possible BIOS update...

Please post all the information you can on the following for us:
  • Video Adaptor (make and model number)
  • PCI modem (make and model number)
  • BIOS version (version and date)
Try to run the chkdsk /r again from Command line. Click Start, then Run, type cmd, and click "Ok". In the Command window, type chkdsk /r and press "Enter". It will want to run on boot, as the drive is currently locked. Type Y and press "Enter".

Its not giving me any info on them, just that any info is unknown or not digitally signed. it does say that the drivers arent installed(code 28).

Download Everest Home Edition, burn the files to a cd, install it on your friends machine, and generate a report. This will give you ALL of the system information for that machine. Then post me the information. I want to look into updated drivers (particularly video drivers) and check to see if there is an updated BIOS version available for the motherboard.
