Splinter Cell Error Message

When I try to start up Splinter Cell, I get a message that says:

General protection fault!

History: FD3DTexture::Cache <- UD3DRenderDevice::CacheTexture <- UD3DRenderDevice::PrimeResources <- UD3DRenderDevice::SetRes <- UWindowsViewport::TryRenderDevice <- UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine

My freind told me that you have to install a patch type thing to play it, but I'm not so sure. Is this true?

And my system specs are:
Windows XP SP1
256 MB RAM
AMD XP 1600 at 1.4Ghz
nVidia GeForce2 GTS

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

It won't do you any harm to install a patch for the game. Patches fix bugs in the game and common errors. Usually, patches are recommended.
