I don't wish to appear ungrateful, but since I made the adjustments recommended, my computer is the s-l-o-w-e-s-t it has ever been.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in anticipation.

XP_PageFileMon.exe is a Visual Basic 6 program which will check your Page File settings and usage. You can display the results in a popup window and/or create a log file

http://www.dougknox....pagefilemon.htm

You can use it to get an idea of the page file requirements

Thanks for your earlier reply Keith.

I have my settings at the moment :

I entered 4095 in the max and 2048 in the min.

What settings do you recommend when you suggested I use the same numbers?

I edited the post because

How big should the page file be?
There is a great deal of myth surrounding this question. Two big fallacies are:

The file should be a fixed size so that it does not get fragmented, with minimum and maximum set the same
The file should be 2.5 times the size of RAM (or some other multiple)

Both are wrong in a modern, single-user system

increasing the ram memory would solve it in one go

Put the dot in system managed then reboot to see if it improves, if not, post back and we will dig something out

The problem here is every different page you go to for the definitive answer tends to contradict the previous advice

Right Keith. Reset and rebooted.
I do not download much stuff. No music. Just a few pix now and again. First one loads ok. Second a little slower. Third usually freezes the screen.

I run AVG free version. Ad aware. I used ti run Norton but uninstalled it.

I still have Liveupdate 2.7 (Symantec Corp) in my programmes. Should I uninstall bearing in mind message flashes stating : We have determined that you still have some symantec apps. registered with Liveupdate. Shouls not remove unless all have been uninstalled first. What to do?

Can you see any other Symantec / Norton programmes in add / remove

If you click search, include hidden and system files, do you get any Symantec / Norton files in programme files

Remove it then

This is optional

Download, install and run Tune Up 2006 Trial

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file then click delete, confirm delete.

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Click optimize and improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Sorry Keith I found some. See edited post above.

I messed up. I put 'Norton/Symantec' in search - nothing.

Put 'Norton' in - 13 files.

Put 'Symantec' in - 9 files.
