I have tried to disable start-up programs and also turn off some running processes, but after I reboot they all seem to come back again! How do I turn them off totally without having them start up again after reboot? (I thought I knew how to do this but obviously not!)

I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 installed.

Thanks!

I ran msconfig.exe then went to the startup section and unchecked the programs that I didn't want to start automatically. I have also tried services.msc but with no luck!

The only possible thing you missed with msconfig was clicking apply before rebooting, especially if the ticks replaced themselves

Have a look at whats running from my signature, use start up and remove the ticks there

If you didn't use msconfig.exe, read about how to use it here:

How to use MSCONFIG

Just one of many sites you can get to using keywords:

win xp - disabling startup programs

Thanks to those that answered my query. I downloaded "What's Running", as advised by Keith, and I, so far, have no problems!
