Hello,

My computer has been running very slow. Webpages take too long to load and I get popups. I ran a Housecall Trend scan the other day and when I pushed the button to fix the very long list of viruses my computer locked up on me. Also, I installed the new version of Firefox this morning but it wouldn't connect to the internet so I uninstalled Firefox from my system. I then installed Firefox 1.0.5 but I had the same problem with it so I uninstalled that program, too. me please!

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.

Thank you for your quick reply! I followed your instructions and when I hit the delete button on the killbox it said "PendingFileRenameOperations registry data has been removed by external process".

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

• Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report.

I waited 15 minutes for Panda to download and nothing happened. Well, my internet browser locked up, but that's about it. I had to CtrlAltDelete in order to close the other browser window and open a new window. The same thing happened with HouseCall except that I didn't wait 20 minutes for it to download.

Let's try this:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  Standard
  
  • Scan Options:
  Scan Archives
  Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
• This program will start to scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
• Save the file to your desktop.
• Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Let's do this aswell.. Follow the instructions;

Disable System Restore;

1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check the "Turn off System Restore"
5. Click Apply. An message shows up.
6. Click "Yes" to do this.
7. Confirm with "Ok".

Reboot.

Enable System Restore;

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" check box.
5. Click Apply, and then click "OK".

Can you connect to the internet now with FireFox, btw?

And do you want some special advice for preventing malware for the future - including some good free anti-virus software? (I wouldn't use Norton..)

I haven't reinstalled Firefox yet, I am going to do that now. I would love some information on free antivirus software...this Norton has completely overtaken my computer and it's quite irritating.

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Kaspersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.
• EULAlyzer by Javacool <= No need to read End user license agreements when installing software--

  # Pick up on things you missed when reading license agreements
  # Keep a saved database of the license agreements you view
  # Instant results - super-fast analysis in just a second
