Still no shutdown

Can anyone help me with this? just re-installed XP on my laptop and everything is fine except it wont shut down. it gets to the "windows is shutting down" message, but then freezes. the mouse doesnt work and neither does CTRl + ALT + DEL. i have to hold down the power button in order to switch off. i am using AVG anti virus
