I have been trying to rip DVDs from my hard drive copies of these movies. I do not have the original DVDs from which the movies came. I have them in files on the hard drive. I downloaded Nero 7 Ultra to try to rip my movies to blank DVDs so that I can have more space available on the hard drive, but when I read the directions, I noticed that there was something about using Nero Vision 4, not Nero 7. I think the authors of Nero were saying that Nero Vision is the right application to rip a DVD. Is this correct? I can put the movies into the place (for lack of a better word) where I'm supposed to put them to burn, but the burn icon does not "light up". It stays grayed out. So, I figured I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas about what I might be doing wrong? I thought I was following the directions correctly, but I get stuck at this step.

I just want to have the movies playable on the DVD blanks that I have available. It would also be nice to remove subtitles I don't need and have them play like a regular DVD, with chapters, a menu, etc. I know that I can also copy movies to CD, but I've heard that the quality isn't as good, plus I would be getting just a simple version of the movie. Since this would be a second generation rip, if I burn it to CD (I think it's correct to say that it would be a rerip), I think quality would be lost.

I just know one thing: I thought that when I bought my computer with a DVD burner, that it would rip movies, but I guess I was wrong. The software that came with the computer (Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator Version 6) does not rip movies, like I thought it would.

how do are you supposed to copy dvds when there are copyright protecters on them whats the point in making dvd copiers if they cant copy half the dvds put out and ts only the really unpopular ones that dont normally have copyright protecters.

The primary aim of DVD burners is for data use with back ups, copyright exists virtually on all published content and no company as big as Nero will get involved in circumventing it

Well, Keith, it turned out I was supposed to be using Nero Vision. Once I found it, (after looking through several folders) I was able to rip a DVD. I've been told that ripping a DVD is superior in quality burning a DVD (onto CD). Any thoughts on this? Is DVD mostly for storing photos and home movies? Or is it mostly for backing up hard drives and other data type stuff? When I bought my computer with the DVD writer, I thought, oh great I'll be able to record movies, maybe even TV shows...I guess I thought CD burners were less powerful.

The file size for movies is usually bigger than a CD so you would either have to record it as VCD, and then probably over a number of discs

Generally, if you have managed to save the file to the hard drive, and can play it, you can copy it to DVD

so are there any programs that will at least copy movies to my hard drive that have copyright protectors. because other wise there isnt much point in haveing one when i can only copy vcds and movies with out copyright protectors and that rare.

Those are in existence, however, Geeks To Go do not provide any assistance with anything which circumvents copyright
