Machine is an Athlon 950mHz based system running XP Home with 384k ram.
Had PSGuard malware recently, and also, a possibly failing hard drive as we
heard it clacking away for a week before. Now, I cannot get booted, it goes to
a black screen and says that the file C:\Windows\System32\Config is corrupt or

My questions is whether I can use my XP disk to load a fresh copy of the missing
or corrupt file onto the drive, so I can boot it long enough to save my data to CDRom....

When I boot from the XP disk and select R for repair, I can login to the C:\Windows
option, but then I get a command prompt and know not what to do....

I suspect either PSGuard killed the config file or the hard drive has failed in
the area that the file was located.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
