I am trying to install "open office" for the PC, and I get a pop-up window with the following error message.

"The windows installer program could not be accessed. This can happen if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not properly installed."

I was not in safe mode, and is there any way I can install without this happening.
My PC specs are

Gateway with 1 gig ram
3.2 GigHz
running Windows XP home ed SP2 - Don't think the techs that got rid of the virus's the last time where able to update completely, but they said the updates they didn't get weren't really important.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Blessings

Martin Jordan

Hi Peterm

I read the instructions on backing up the registery, but the backup program that it suggests I use, ie ntbackup, will not start. It loads as a process but I don't have access to it. This may be happening because of the incomplete install of the SP2.

Is there another way to back up the registery of can I just export the relevent key.

Thank for all of your help

Blessings

Have you gone onlineand visited the windows update site.
Start internet explorer go to the top select tools then windows update.
Does this update your system?
Did you install backup from the CD?

I am going to the update site now.

It seems it is stuck on the "checking for latest updates from the computer"

I closed the browser and went back, and I get the message that I need to re-install some software and register, so I did that.

It say "checking forthe laterst version", "downloading" and "registering"

Then it takes me back to the install page. So I try again and It keeps bringing me back to the page to install and register. I can see how this could go on all night.

I do not have automatic update turned on. The techs at the shop that cleaned it for virus's were not able to finish the update. The siad the computer would not take it and they didn't think that the updatesthat it missed would affect the computer in any big way.

I am stuck at this point.

Thank you

I dont have the disc handy. I have a lot of things in storage preparing for a move to California, and is must be amongst those things.

The icon for the backup program is there, but no program. Is that possible?

As for the sight-seeing tour of the registry, I'm game if you think it would help.

Thank you

I am still getting the same error message. The update installed fine, but when I run the "Open Office" install, I get the same error.

Thank you

If you go to Microsoft Update, click custom install and hopefully it will show a list, even if it won't install them

There is a 250MB download which has every update from a basic XP install to the current February ones, though it will be good to see which you are missing first, if possible

http://update.micros...t.aspx?ln=en-us

This is slightly different to Windows Update
