I need an operating system that will run 1 gig or more, utilize what my machine has to offer and not tell me what to do like XP. I've been told NT is the answer I seek. I like to game, use my dos based Auto Cad and edit my system from dos. I've been given windows NT. Where do I begin? What books do I need and will it really do what I want as far as gaming, internet etc...?
Here's what I have right now, plus 512mb chip waiting to be used.

Winnt and win2k are no good for gaming due to their limited support for DirectX

Your options really are winme and winxp, and winme is way long in the tooth
