Question about notebook soundcards and games

I have an Audigy 2 PCMCIA soundcard which I bought primarily for music listening, now I realize using an external souncard will maybe improve gaming performance by taking some load off the CPU.

What do I have to do to make sure the CPU is not processing sound? Say for instance in Battlefield 1942 in the sound options, you can select "hardware acceleration". Should this be checked or unchecked when using the soundcard? And should I somehow completely disable the onboard sound (if so, how do I do this)?

Sorry is this is all a bit obvious but I know next to nothing about PC audio.
