Yesterday, 12:16 AM :
I am a newbie and a total comp idiot. For that I apologize. I have no idea what information you all need from me so I will post the problem.

I have a Dell Dimension 4700, Windows XP. My computer is less than a year old and it runs very very slow. It takes about 10-15 seconds for a page to load on IE and Mozilla Firefox.

When I attempt to open an application (like ACDSee) it takes up to a minute to load.

Is there any way to get my computer moving as fast as when I first received it? Please excuse me if these questions seem stupid, like I said, I don't know what to do and it is so frustrating.

I was told to go to the Malware and Badware removal page and I did everything that it said. The last step having been updating Windows XP.

Here is the log I was told to post here.

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. :tazz:

Before we can get started on fixing your problem you must change the location of Hijackthis. It should not run directly from your desktop or a temp directory.
  • Download and run the HijackThis autoinstall program
  • Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files as the destination.
  • Run the program only from that location from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

I see some signs of malware, but nothing active. Let's rule out malware first and then we'll go over some steps you can take to tune up your computer.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new hijackthis log.

That's a good sign. Not much to worry about there.
Delete this file.

C:\WINDOWS\pcconfig.dat

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

I am helping you, but your posts are at 3:00am my time, and that's usually when I sleep. :)

Your computer may run a bit slower until the prefetch files are restored, which will happen after three reboots. Then you should notice things start to pick up again.

You describe your computer as running slow. Is it actually your computer, or just your internet connection?
How long does it take your computer to boot up?

Can you give me examples of times when your computer is running slow?

My apologies. I panicked when my comp slowed down.

It takes about 3-4 minutes to reboot. Sometimes longer.

It takes a while to load regular programs, too. My ACDSee freezes and will close itself.

But IE is really A PROBLEM. I have cable internet and never had a problem before but it seems that lately everything is so much slower, pages won't load completely and pictures just show a red X. I tried Mozilla Firefox and had the same problem. The pages wouldn't even load. I am signed in to AIM and Yahoo Messenger just fine and it signs on quickly so I assume that my internet is working properly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reset your cable modem just by unplugging it, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in.
Are you using a router?

Please post a new hijackthis log.
