Windows Media player wont play movies online

for no aparent reason WMP has stopped playing movies that are embedded directly into websites (www.gamespot.com, Planetvids.com comfused.com for example). I downloaded the newest version of WMP and installed it trying to fix this problem, no luck. The movie loads but WMP sits there and says "ready" in the status bar, but it never plays the movie on its own, and clicking "play" does nothing. This happens in Firefox and IE. Im running XP Pro with SP2. I dont have many 3rd party codecs installed, just Divx and Xvid and it has no problem playing all my movies otherwise, including videos downloaded directly from sites where they are normally embedded.

any help on this would be greatly appreaciated.
