Dear Sirs:

I am typing on a friend's computer. I have a trojan virus on my computer. A friend told me about geekstogo and how good you guys are. I turned my computer on this afternoon to get some help and I got this message from Data Execution Prevention : "To help protect your computer, Windows has closed this program." Then nothing happens. None of my icons appear. There is no bar at the bottom of the page. This friend helped me get on in safe mode and before it would finish I got a message that said "System has shut down." I had to unplug the machine because I couldn't get it to do anything.

Where do I start? I would greatly appreciate any help you could give me.

Anajohn

Hello, anajohn, and welcome to GeeksToGo!

When you boot your computer up in Normal Mode (with the blank desktop), let's try the following:

  1. Click on Ctrl+Alt+Del
  2. Task Manager should start. Click on the File tab, and click New Task (Run...)
  3. Type in explorer and hit the ENTER key.
  4. Your desktop should appear.

If this does not work, let me know.

If it does work, please do the following:

Please follow the steps in this topic, and post back with the following logs if you are still having problems and I will look over the log for you:

  1. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  2. OTListIt2.txt and Extras.txt (if applicable)
  3. Rooter.txt

These logs may or may not fit into one post. If they are cut off at the end for any reason, it is because there is a character limit on posts. Please make sure that it didn't get cut off, and feel free to post the rest of it in a separate reply. smile.gif

I was not able to get to Windows Explorer. I followed your directions and when I hit ctrl, alt, delete, a box came up with six buttons, one which was task manager. I could click on 5 of the buttons but the task manager button was disabled.

I appreciate you working with me. Do you have another suggestion?

Do you happen to have your Windows XP CD available?

We may need to do a repair install. This will not cause you to lose important data, or anything. This will only reinstall the operating system so we can get it up and running again. This also will not completely solve your problem, only make it so we can get the computer usable again.

Let me know if you do, and I'll give you further instructions. smile.gif

No we don't. My wife got the computer from her parents when she was in college and I we have not been able to find it.

What can we do next? Are we in big trouble?

No, just was seeing if I had that possibility if I needed it.

Let's try this. smile.gif

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop**
  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

  3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  5. Close any open browsers.
  6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------
  7. Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  8. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  9. Please post the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combo-fix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**
