I'm not sure where to best post this as there are scores of threads on the
topic. Alas, I am frustrated beyond all imagination. I am trying to help a
friend square away a problem that began at the end of July with (from what I
have read) and is related to KB927891. I am getting several errors and
migraines.

The first: Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem
and needs to close
The second-infinity: wuauclt.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close
These errors are surrounded by multiple XXXXXXXXXX referenced memory at
XXXXXXXXX. The memory could not be read errors.

My symptoms are noted through several other related posts; windows updates
won't run without crashing, system resources being taxed, unsuspecting
household pets being kicked by their WindowsXP-running owners worldwide, etc.
etc.

I have seen scores of highly complex approaches to the issue, but nothing
useful for a novice who just wants his stupid OS to be easily fixed.

I applied one suggestion (that was posted in several places). This
suggestion was rooted in MS’s article on the 0x80248011 error (which I also
received) to stop auto update services and rename the SoftwareDistribution
folder to SoftwareDistribution.old and the restart services. After finally
figuring out that I had to uninstall Norton to be able to rename the folder,
this approach seemed to work. I was finally able to connect to windows
update, download many missed updates and install with success. I cracked out
the champagne, rejoiced, until reboot. I was right back to where I started
(in fact it seemed worse). Did I say "AAAAARRRGGGGHHHH" yet?

Another suggestion was to download the latest installer and running the install /wuforce. No success with that either.

Most of the posts on this topic end with: 'I scrapped my OS and started from
scratch'. That is really not an option for my friend and I believe someone
out there (smarter than I) may be able to offer some useful direction to once
and all resolve this issue.

This is a desperate cry for help. Anyone? Your time is appreciated.

Hi SithMonkey7...

Have you had that rig checked for malware? Some malicious software can cause problems of this nature...it may be worth the time to have our malware experts have a look at it before we start digging for an operating system problem.

Please go to the Malware Forum and follow the instructions found there.

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself...then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum. Be patient, the Malware Forum is a very busy place and a two or three day wait is not unusual. Do not reply to or bump your own topic. If it shows a reply it may be overlooked as one that is being worked on.

Click Here to start a new topic and paste your log.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

hey wannabe1,

I really appreciate your taking time to reply. I have read through the malware forum and have a quick question. If I have SP1&2 and am running Norton Priemer, can I just jump to step5 and run hijacker? And if not, will I need to uninstall Norton to run these other programs?

Thanks,

Just post a HiJackThis log with a short description of the problems you've been experiencing and see if the experts see anything that may be causing them. They may suggest some other checks to look for more deeply hidden malware like rootkits.

I developed this problem recently, as well... the Generic Host Process error only comes up sometimes, but the wuauclt.exe error won't go away on startup, and sometimes comes back randomly later while the computer is on.

For some reason, today, for the first time since this problem began, the error report redirected me to this Microsoft Windows Error Reporting page , naming antivirus software as the related error.

HUH?

So I tried turning off my AV software (Trend Micro Antivirus, which has solved a whole lot of errors for me in the past) and restarted. Same error. So I manually disabled everything through Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services, and restarted yet again...

NO ERROR.

I don't know if it's Trend Micro specifically, or antivirus software in particular, but there is definitely some odd conflict happening between these two items because I have yet to receive the wuauclt.exe error, or any other errors, since disabling this.

Any similar stories? Is this old news I've just discovered now? :)
