Hi all,

I seem to be having the same problem as a fellow board member was having:

Sutter's Mill posted:

(Thread link: http://www.geekstogo...k-t272317.html)

"Previously I received a warning from XP Security that I had an assortment of about 35 different infections so I immediately downloaded the free trial of avast and it cleaned up my system and the icon said my system was now secure, but the warnings kept popping up. I installed adaware but it never worked as something stopped it from opening. So I scanned for spyware w/stinger and after the scan it revealed nothing was found.

In the meantime every time I clicked on either ie explorer or firefox’ icons, I kept getting a Trojan warning (something about the keystroke) and so I googled that and found your website and checked out your forum. I then tried the Malaware link posted and downloaded that and after I ran it, everything stopped to the point where I can no longer get online.

In short order I have experienced the loss of access to the internet via explorer and firefox. As well, when I click on the following icons or try to start the following programs I get the resulting complications:

1.Skype : Error – Application Not Found.
2.Anything on the Control Panel results as – C:\Windows|system32\rundll32.exe – Application Not Found.
3.When I click on Firefox, Explorer, Word, etc, the result is – Open With/ Choose the program you want to use to open this file:
4.When I click any program via the Start Panel I once again encounter the Error – Application Not Found box.
5.Avast results in Open With/ Choose the program you want to use to open this file:
6.The Avast logo no longer appears beside the time at the bottom right of the screen.
7.I’m also missing some other .dll files but don’t know which.

The list of Malware names I received from XP Security Tool was:

1.Email-Worm.JS.Gigger
2.IM-Worm.Win32.Kelvir.k
3.BWME.Twelve.1378
4.IRC-Worm.DOS.Septic
5.IRC-Worm.DOS.Loa
6.P2P-Worm.Win32.Duload.a
7.Happy_II.506
8.Lemena.3544
9.Kot.b
10.EICAR-Test-File
11.Virus.Boot-DOS.V.1526
12.Macro.Visio.Radiant
13.Virus.BAT.8Fish
14.Trojan-Clicker.Win32.Small.k
15.Trojan-Clicker-Spy.HTML.Bankfrasud
16.DoS.Win32.DieWar
17.Exploit.CodeBaseExec
18.Trojan-Spy.HTML.Bankfraud
19.Trojan-Proxy.Win32.Agent.x
20.Email-Worm.VBC.Peach
21.Virus.Boot-DOS.V.1536"

I am having the exact same problem. I have Windows XP and Norton 360. Norton didn't detect the malware at first, then I ran a scan from Norton and it found 'Trojan.FakeAV' and said to reboot inorder to remove it. I restared my PC, the malware notifications and pop-ups were not showing, and programmes like Norton and Firefox didn't open. When I opened them it just says "Choose the program you want to use to open this file".
Thankfully, Internet Explorer still works and thats how I managed to find this forum.

Sutter managed to resolve the problem with the guidance of essexboy, i'm hoping he'll be able to help me too!

Greetings, sundayla. Welcome to GeeksToGo. My name is Cruise475 and I am here to help you with your malware troubles.

Before we get started, I would like to mention a few things :)
  • Please stick with your topic, a lack of symptoms does not mean a clean system!
  • Please follow my instructions step by step, if something does not work, or you get confused just ask for clarification :)
  • Please do not attach any logs unless I specifically ask for it, it makes it easier for us to check your logs! Just post them right into the topic. If it requires more than one post, feel free to spread them over multiple posts!
  • While we are working together, please do not run any tools without being directed to do so. Running some of our tools unsupervised can be very dangerous!
  • Lastly, You may find it beneficial to print my instructions, or save them to a text file. As some of my instructions may require you to reboot into safe mode :)

Please head over to the Malware and Spyware Cleaning Guide and follow the directions there,

Once you are complete, post the required logs back here, and we can get started!

Thanks
Cruise

Hi Cruise,

I followed your instructions and those in the Malware and Spyware Cleaning Guide, but I cannot open the .exe files once I've downloaded them just like my other programmes (norton, word, firefox)

When I double-click to open the .exe file it says:

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) - Choose the program you want to use to open this file
ERUNT - Choose the program you want to use to open this file
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Choose the program you want to use to open this file
GMER Rootkit Scanner - Choose the program you want to use to open this file

The only programme that opened was OTL. I performed the scan, but I only ended up with one file, the OTL.Txt. I performed the OTL scan yesterday but deleted both txt files this morning thinking I will have two updated files from a new scan. I tried selecting 'Use SafeList under Extra Registry' in order to get the Extras.Txt file again, but it just reverts back to 'None under Extra Registry' when I click Quick Scan.

Update: I managed to get the Extras.txt by selecting 'Use SafeList under Extra Registry' as soon as I clicked Quick Scan - i hope that method is okay. I will post logs in following post

Hi there,

Yes that is fine. OTL will only show the Extra Registry Scan on the first run of the program, unless it is selected to be shown again, that is why it did not show up the second time :)

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    PRC - C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe (Microsoft Corporation)
    O33 - MountPoints2\{503d03a5-e0ec-11dd-a035-00219b1010d4}\Shell\AutoRun\command - "" = .\RECYCLER\INFO

  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Next, please try to run MBAM again, and let me know how the computer is running.

Hey Cruise,

I downloaded MBAM again, saved it on desktop, double-clicked it but it still said "Choose the program you want to use to open this file". So i right-clicked the icon and selected 'Start' and that managed to run the programe. I installed it and performed the scan. It found and removed 7 infected items.

After rebooting, the progammes and apps all loaded up. All programmes open with double clicks, icons have reappeared on task bar again and no pop-ups so far. :)

Here is the log from the log list:

Hi There,

That is great news.

If you open up MBAM there is a LOGS tab where you can retrieve the log from that scan. I would like to take a look at it when you get a chance!

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

The next scan I am going to have you do will take a long time most likely. I think we have most of the infection cleared, but I need to make sure there is nothing else hiding.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Thanks
Cruise

Cruise,

I downloaded and installed JavaRa successfully, but the Kaspersky scan seems to be odd. I scanned My Computer as you intstructed, at about 1hr30mins it was about 92% done but then when I checked again it seemed to have finished...but it didn't say 100% and couldn't locate the 'Save as Text' button, it just seemed to have stopped and said 'null' next to Status. After clicking 'View Report' there was nothing there, I went back and it started the whole search again. What could have happened?

Hey There,

I have no idea, maybe the connection timed out? It's hard to say with computers sometimes.
