Hello pckenley and welcome to the GTG forums. After reviewing your log it appears that you have a CWS variant infection. Please proceed with the following steps.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
    • Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click "Save Log...". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
    • Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.
OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here along with the About:Buster log as a relpy to this topic using the Add Reply button and I will review it.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGITIMATE AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Thanks for your help. I downloaded the CWShredder - no problems.
Then I downloaded the AboutBuster - no problems.
Then I open the program to unzip it. It says it is complete,
and I press the finished key, and it closes. Nothing is brought up.
I went and changed it, because it looked like it saving into My Documents,
but I can't get into that without the message and freezing of my computer.
So the last time it saved it as the AboutBuster file onto my desktop. However,
I can't open files on my destop either. So I have the program, and I
believe it is unzipped, but now I can't get into the directory to
continue on with your directions. What should I do now?
Thank you so much for your help!!!

Hi pckenley. After unzipping AboutBuster the program does not open automatically. If you cannot navigate to it using Windows Explorer and double-click on it to start it then try this (you can also use this to start CWShredder if you cannot double-click on it to start it). This assumes that CWShredder.exe is on your Desktop and that there is an AboutBuster folder on your Desktop.

To run AboutBuster click Start and then click Run. Copy and paste the line below and paste it into the Run dialog box and press the enter key:C:\Documents and Settings\Carolyn Kenley\Desktop\AboutBuster\AboutBuster.exe
Follow the previous directions for updating AboutBuster and then close it.

Now to run CWShredder click Start and then click Run. Type the line below into the Run dialog box and press the enter key:C:\Documents and Settings\Carolyn Kenley\Desktop\CWShredder.exe
and to run AboutBuster click Start and then click Run. Type the line below into the Run dialog box and press the enter key:C:\Documents and Settings\Carolyn Kenley\Desktop\AboutBuster\AboutBuster.exe
You might want to print these directions so you have the proper lines to type since you will be in Safe Mode and will not have access to the internet.

Follow the previous steps and perform all of the directions as outlined. Post back here if you have any problems. Otherwise post your new HijackThis log.

Cheers.

Ok, tried the start and run. It doesn't work with the AboutBuster.
I can see the zipped file, and the file folder on my desktop. I can
open the CWShredder with that( start and run command)
no problem. I tried to trash and reload AboutBuster, but still no luck.
When I open the run window and copy and paste what you said
it returns with the following message:

Windows cannot find 'C:\Documents'. Make sure you typed the
name correctly and then try again. To search for a file, click the
start button, and then click search.

Thanks for your help!!!

Hi pckenley. Try putting quotation marks around the text like this:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Carolyn Kenley\Desktop\AboutBuster\AboutBuster.exe"

Let me know if that works.

I tried that. I copied and pasted exactly what you had,
but it turned into the Dr. Watson error and froze my computer.
Thanks!!

Hi pckenley. Let's try this. Print off the directions for the fix if you have not done so already. Then start where it says Boot into Safe Mode and continue from there. Let's see if we can eliminate some of the problems and then we'll tackle the rest.

Cheers.

Ok, I got into safe mode. I ran the CWShredder - no problems. I was able to open my AboutBuster file on my desktop. I tried to update as you told me to do earlier, but it told me it encountered problems. So I went on as instructed. I Got it to scan and it asked to shut down explorer.exe. I saved the log and exited. It said the log was saved in the AboutBuster file. I had no option where to save it. In normal mode I am still unable to open that file. Then I went to TrendMicro Housecall. I got the program. I click the drives (all of them) to scan. At first I clicked just my C: drive. I left it for 30 minutes, because it said it would take some time. Nothing happened. It shows a percent of scan, and virus etc. Nothing appeared, so I checked them all. Again 30 minutes later it had done nothing. So I exited out, and restarted my computer and did a new hijackthis scan. Here is where I am at. Thanks so much for your help!!!

Hi pckenley. OK. We'll need to come back to the AboutBuster later but let's try and clean some of the other problems up first. Please proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Please download LSP-Fix and WinSockFix from the following links and save them to a location you can find later if necessary.LSP-Fix Download Link
WinsockFix
To remove New.net please go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, look for and remove New.Net. If you can't find it, then please go here and follow the removal instructions in Procedure 4 at the bottom of the page.

Step #2

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Step #3

Click Start then Run and type in:
services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find Network Security Service. Rightclick and choose Properties. On the General tab under Service Status click the Stop button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select Disabled. Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.

Note: You may get an error here when trying to access the properties of the service. If you do get an error, just select the service and look there in the top left of the main service window and click "Stop" to stop the service. If that gives an error or it is already stopped, just skip this step and proceed with the rest.

Copy these instructions to notepad and save them on your desktop for easy access. You must follow these directions exactly and you cannot skip any part of it.

Step #4

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:* Restart the computer.
* As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
* Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
* Press Enter.
Start HijackThis (do not start anything else) and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://search.window...k=sbar1_srchbtn

These are fixes that I recommend you do:

The PowerReg Scheduler is installed by many companies as a registration reminder. It is not a required application and is believed to send information about your computer back to the company that installed it.
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Next in Hijack This click on the Config button in the lower right corner. In the next window click on the Misc Tools button at the top then click the Delete an NT service button. Copy and paste the following line in that box: 11F#`I
Click OK.

Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\system32\javagx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apilx.exe
C:\WINDOWS\javaem.exe
C:\Program Files\DownloadWare\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\winex\ <--folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\NEWDOTNET\ <--folder

Navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Carolyn Kenley (Repeat for all user names)\Local Settings\Temp\ folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" click Delete Files. Put a check by Delete Offline Content and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.

Step #5

Next run Aboutbuster. Double click aboutbuster.exe, click OK, click Start, then click OK. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them.

Step #6

Finally, run CWShredder. Just click on the cwshredder.exe then click Fix (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

Step #7

OK. Reboot your computer normally and reconnect to the internet. Go to Trend Micro Housecall and run an on-line virus scan. Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself. Housecall will detect the leftover files from this hijacker.

If you can not connect to the Internet after removing New.net, please run the LSP-Fix program I had you download earlier, and click on the finish button. If you still have a problem run the WinSockFix program and click the Fix button. Reboot if you run either tool and you should be able to get back on.

This hijacker is known to alter or delete certain files so check this out please:

Download the Hoster.exe . Double-click the file and press Restore Original Hosts and press OK. Exit Program.

If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here and download SdHelper13.zip. Unzip SDHelper.dll the file to the folder containing your Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy)

Check in the C:\Windows\system32 folder to be sure you have a file named Shell.dll. If you do not have one, go to the C:\Windows\system32\dllcache folder. Find shell.dll and right click on it. Choose Copy from the menu. Open the System32 folder and right click on an empty space in the window. Choose Paste from the menu.

control.exe may have been deleted. See if control.exe is present in C:\windows\system32. If control.exe isn't there then download it control.exe and place it in your c:\windows\system32 folder.

IMPORTANT!: Please check your ActiveX security settings. They may have been changed by this CWS variant to allow ALL ActiveX!! Reset your active x security settings like so...
  • Go to Internet Options > Security > Internet
  • Click default level then click OK
  • Now click Custom Level
  • In the ActiveX section
  • Set Download signed ActiveX controls to prompt
  • Set Download unsigned ActiveX controls to prompt
  • Set Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to disable
Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.

Ok problem. Step #1 - It first says to Download those 2 programs. I got the first one. The second one - Winsockfix I was unable to download. It says that it was unable to locate the file for download. So I tried going to the next part, removing the new.net. I can't get into my control panel without Dr. Watson freezing up my computer. I noticed Step #2 requires me to go to My Computer, which I am also unable to do at this point. Now what? Thanks!!!

Hi pc. Well, if you can't get that file you can't get it. Your current infection is playing havok. You might need it to restore your internet connectivity and if that is the case you will have to have someone else download it for you. The link is good and it is working properly so the problem lies on your end.

If you can't get into My Computer then start Windows Explorer and click on the Tools>Folder Options menu. Go the the View tab and make the settings from there.

Start from the beginning again and go through all of the steps.
