Hi michaeljoe,

1. You are currently using HijackThis from the desktop, this can cause problems.
HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues.
Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, download and move HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

STEPS For Creating Folder
1. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.

2. Move HijackThis to the new folder
2. There are traces from Trend Micro in your log. It's not recommanded using more than one antivirus program.
Please uninstall it and reboot afterwards.

3. Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click Download Now to download the program.
  • Install it. Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
  • Click the Sweep Options tab.
  • Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
    • Sweep Memory
    • Sweep Registry
    • Sweep Cookies
    • Sweep All User Accounts
    • Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
    • Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
    • Sweep for Rootkits
    • Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
  • Click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply with an new HijackThis log, please.

I've having a bit of trouble. I moved HJT to c:/HJT. Downloaded SpySweeper
and ran it. After it scanned (2 hours +) and I clicked the offending items, the app
crashed. Bummer! I'm running it again now. Just wanted you to know I'm working
on it.

Ok, I"m stuck. I see the Trend Micro reference in HJT. should I "fix" it in HJT?

Second time running spysweeper. The scan took 2 hrs 45 mins.

It found 15 "item" and 3500+ "traces". I then checked all the entries including the rootkit entry and clicked Next. Spysweeper says it's in the "Removal" step. I see the hourglass and it's been in this condition for 4 hours. I can't believe it could take that long? Should I cancel out of it? Please advise, I'm very frustrated.

thanks,

Hi michaeljoe,

Please stop the scan for the while.

Post back a new HijackThis log and the Spy Sweeper one if you have it and let us know if you brother's computer is still having pop ups, please.

Spysweeper was still running after 8 hours yesterday. It locked the PC up to where I had to unplug it to get it to shut off. I don't see where Spysweeper offers a log, maybe there is one in the program folders? I wrote down some of what it found:

Hi michaeljoe,

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

* Please download AproposFix by Swandog46 from here

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

* Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

* When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Hi michaeljoe,

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

1. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Save it to your desktop but dont run it yet.

2. Open ewido anti-malware: you will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates

3. Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it, click > Options over to the left then > Program Options > Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

Hi michaeljoe,

Your HijackThis log looks fine. Please delete the cookies.

1. Let us try again with Spy Sweeper: update the program to the latest definitions.
Close the program.

2. Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note: In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
Save it to your desktop but don't run it yet.

3. Launch Notepad and copy paste the following text in bold:

---------------------------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{147A976E-EEE1-4377-8EA7-4716E4CDD239}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{9AFB8248-617F-460D-9366-D71CDEDA3179}]

---------------------------------------------------

* Save it to your desktop as fix.reg and as Type "All files". You'll see an ice cube icon.

Double click on fix.reg and allow when prompted to merge withy the registry.

4. Boot into Safe mode by tapping F8 as your computer restarts.

* Re-open Spy Sweeper:
  • Click Options on the left side.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.
* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\switchagreement.txt

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.

5. Post back the Spy Sweeper log and let us know how is running the computer now, please.

Spysweeper ran better that time. The log is below. In Killbox, I did get the "PendingFileRenameOperations" message you mentioned. I clicked Ok. Had to do a manual reboot after exiting Killbox. I haven't seen any popups the last couple of sessions.

here is the Spysweeper log:
