I think I have a trojan infection [RESOLVED]

Hello - hope you can help. I have been using Yahoo Widgets with a ping detector icon.

For months everything has been fine, but in the last week and a half my ping detector has shown random ping spikes, web pages are slow to load and download speeds are very bad for a 4 meg broadband connection.

I have ran evertyhing advised and it has shown nothing:
Winsox
Cleanup
Adware
CWS
Spybot
Ewido
Trojan (I even bought the full version!)

Did you know you can kill a system by installing too much protection?

Did you check if the Windows firewall was disabled?

Then disable the resident guards of
Ewido
a-squared
Windows-Defender

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"

Under Add/Remove Software uninstall your Java version and get the latest one (version 5 Update 6) here:

Reboot and let me know if that improved things.

Hello, thanks for the advice.

I followed your instructiions. I had to disable Windows Defender via msconfig as there didnt appear to be any other way of accessing it (it doesn't appear in the task bar with norton, ewido, etc).

When I rebooted all the resident guards that I had disabled reappeared (a2, ewido) along with Norton, Win Patrol, Trojan Hunter and Spy Protector. There was a big ping spike of 950 when ewido updated and web-pages are a little slow to download (eg if I visit the apple site then I see all the image tags for a few seconds before the proper images are displayed). Whilst typing this post the ping detector hit 450+ :tazz:

Do you think I should remove/uninstall the likes of ewido, a2 and winpatrol? I am running Norton firewall and AV, Windows Defender (usually: i have not re-enabled it as of yet), Trojan Hunter and Spy Protector. It does seem like I have too many apps trying to do the same thing

Hi Rob,

Yes. That was the first thing that crossed my mind as well when I saw your log.

If you rightclick Ewido in the systray and choose Exit the icon will disappear.

Then fix these two lines in HijackThis:
O23 - Service: ewido security suite control - ewido networks - C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\ewidoctrl.exe
O23 - Service: ewido security suite guard - ewido networks - C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\ewidoguard.exe

Then reboot.

This way you can still use the rightclick Scan option for Ewido, but the resident guard should stay off.

Hi Pieter

I've had a few days to wathc my PC since I've made the changes. I've removed a2 guard, WinPatrol and Ewido is no longer running in real time but I can use it to scan (as you instructed). I've re-enabled Windows Defender.

So what should be running in real time are as follows:

Nortin Internet Security
Spy Protector
Trojan Hunter
Windows Defender

Is this still over the top?

Anyway, I am still getting huge ping spikes periodically but they dont seem to be occurring as frequently (that may just be my perception and not fact, to be honest) and web-pages can still seem a little slow to open. Also downloads from websites aren't great either. I downloaded the following:

Ewido at 19 kbps from the Ewido website,
iTunes at 50 kbps from the Apple website,
and Winzip 10 at 11 kbps from www.download.com

My downloads start quite fast at about 225 kbps but always get slower and slower and slower :-(

To be honest, I haven't ahd a chance to properly test Windows Defender, but the problem is still a beta version.

It wouldn't hurt to try how the computer behaves when you uninstall it.

I still think you have a little overlap in your protection, but not by far as much as you had before.

You can also have a look here:

and see if you can gain some more by disabling some of the Windows services.

Hello again

Just wanted to update you - since I uninstalled Windows Defender, my system is flying along as normal. It seems I did have too much protection running. Maybe when the Beta is finshed it wil lbe more stable.
