Hey there,
My computer has been saying that i have this virus for the past month or two and I cannot get rid of it. It is a trojan winkrootkit virus and i have also seen it pop up as W32/Trojan.ATA (I imagine these are the same thing b/c the same file is infected under both names.) I have Verizon DSL and I am currently using their INternet security suite, Macafee, and I purchased Xoftspy. I have been trying to get rid of the virus but everytime i try to delete/quaratine/or clean it, it won't let me. Now about two days ago my computer won't even run in normal mode. (I'm using my computer at work to write this email) I have read several of the posts from people w/similar problems, but is there anyway to download those things you said if i can only run in safe mode??? I haven't found a way to connect to the internet since it started really acting up.. If you have any suggestions, i'm all ears b/c i'm am extremely frustrated with the whole thing. PLEASE HELP ME!! I'll be forever indebted!!

THanks,

Scott

Hello sbushong and welcome to GeeksToGo!

Since you are not able to connect to the internet with your computer, you will need to download these programs to another computer and transfer them via floppy disk, CD, flash drive, or some other means.

1. Download WinKRootKitRemover to your desktop.
  • Click the icon to open the program
  • Then, click RUN and then START
  • Save the log it creates to your desktop.
.

2. Download Silent Runners to your desktop.
  • Click on the Silent Runners.vbs icon to open the program
  • Then click OPEN and YES in the next screen.
  • Let the program run its course. It will tell you when it has finished its work
  • This will generate a text file on your desktop called "Startup Programs ...".
  • Save this report for your next reply here.
3. Launch Notepad
  • Copy/paste the content of the codebox below into a new text file.
  • Save it as Options.txt on your Desktop and as type"All Files"

RegSearch Options File

[Search]
winik

[Exclude]

[Options]
Filter=KVDLU

4. Download Registry Search.zip by Bobbi Flekman and Save it to your desktop.
  • Extract it to your desktop.
  • Click on the Registry Search.zip icon on your desktop to open the program.
  • Click regsearch.exe to start the program.
  • Click on "Import" and Select the file "Options.txt" that you created above.
  • Click "OK" and Registry Search will search the Registry and report what it finds.
  • Post the results into your next reply.
5. Please make a reply here in your thread. I need to see the following reports:
  • Log from WinKRootKitRemover
  • Silent Runners Log
  • Registry Search Log
  • New HijackThis log
Best of luck and let me know how it goes.

1. Download RegDACL, and extract it to your desktop.

2. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as FixReg.bat and all file types Be sure to save it in the same folder as the one where you extracted RegDACL.

RegDACL HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINIK /GGE:F
RegDACL HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINIK /GGE:F
RegDACL HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\WinIK /GGE:F
RegDACL HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\WinIK\Security /GGE:F
RegDACL HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINIK /GGE:F
RegDACL HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINIK\0000 /GGE:F
RegDACL HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINIK\0000 /GGE:F
RegDACL HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINIK\0000 /GGE:F

3. Open the RegDACL folder, and double click on your FixReg.bat you just created and allow it to run. Answer yes to any prompts.

4. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it on your C:\ drive as fixme.reg. For the "save as type" choose all files

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

  • Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it.
  • You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".
  • Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".
5. Reboot the computer. Run WinKRootKitRemover, Silent Runners, RegSearch and HijackThis again, and post those logs here in a reply.

Regards,
Matt

It's hard to tell whether or not your computer will be able to start correctly once you're cleaned up. We'll just have to clean you up as best we can and find out.

I'm far too out of it tonight to post some instructions. I will try to get some information to you as soon as I am able. Tomorrow evening at the absolute latest.

Regards,
Mat

Log is looking much better. Please run a scan with HijackThis and place a check next to the following items:R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {014DA6C9-189F-421a-88CD-07CFE51CFF10} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QMFGZ5ow] C:\PROGRA~1\{wxqvvrx\RAwDDcRN.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QgpHV5ov] C:\PROGRA~1\{wxqvvrp\dcgDH0BN.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [wvtpuwdm] C:\WINDOWS\System32\riafpofd.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis (including internet browsers) and click Fix Checked.

Download and install CleanUp!
NOTE: Do NOT run this program if you have XP Professional 64 bit edition. If you're unsure please do not run it!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files (if present)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to log-off/reboot at the end, if it does please do so.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a fresh HijackThis log for review.
Sorry it took so long!
