Hello and welcome to the site.. Let's get started. :)

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following program(s) if present:

Surf Sidekick
Surf Sidekick 2
Surf Sidekick 3
AlfaCleaner

It may prompt about whether or not you are sure you want to remove this program. Reply Yes to this prompt.

==

IF there is no Add/Remove Programs entry, click on Start -> Run and type in:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe /u

and hit OK. A code will be displayed that it will ask you to enter. Please enter this code and reboot. Once back to your desktop continue with the rest of the fix.

==

Please download the trial version of Ewido Anti-malware here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

==

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

==
Run a scan with HijackThis and check the following objects for removal IF present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

I'm having extreme difficulty trying to get rid of this program. It's not listed in the Add Remove section of the control panel, but then when I try to do it manually by typing in what you suggested in the "Run" section it cannot find the file. So what I tried to do next was just skip that step and run hijack this, and basically removed what you asked me to, then I went with running ewido (all while in Safe mode) and it scanned for a good hour or so, and once it completed it managed to find about 40 infected sections and when it tried to clean the processes, it got to the ssk.exe file and basically just froze...well not froze, but didn't go further into cleaning the remaining processes. I don't know what to do, and my display is really really bad, it went from 1024 x 768 to the 800 x 600, and not just that I went from the 24 million bit colour scheme, to the 4 bit, 4!! and I also tried to remove the other programs you suggested once I finished scanning with Ewido and didn't have much luck. Please help, I really appreciate your help so far

Not sure why I missed this. Please apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Click here: http://www.microsoft...&DisplayLang=en
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh HijackThis log. :tazz:

Thanks so far for the help Rawe, but I ran into some trouble when trying to install Service Pack 1a, I had a message pop-up telling me that "The Product Key used to install Windows is invalid. Please contact your system administrator or retailer immediately to obtain a valid product key..." Are there any ways around this? And what can I do now?

While we understand that you may not have been aware, your copy of Windows is not legitimate. Unfortunately, we are unable to help you any further on this site, as we have a strict policy we adhere to in only helping people who have legitimate copies of Windows. Thank you for understanding.
