I have followed steps 1-4 before reaching this point. I have run the anti-spyware programs in both normal mode and safe mode. Have done the online virus scans about 5 times. They removed some but not others. Installed NOD32 antivirus and have run it several times in both normal and safe mode. I changed the scanning level to deep and enabled all options in that program. It removed several viruses.

I cannot rid the system of WinTools spyware and a background process called "faxps.exe". Every time I delete the process, it comes right back within a second in the registry. This process often consumes 100% CPU resources, slowing system.
The exact command line:

C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\faxps.exe

Here is the title path of a IE popup. I had just gone to the windows update website:
http://www.winfirewa...=update windows

ActiveScan log:

Possible Virus. No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\faxps.exe
Adware:Adware/WinTools No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\Temp\~828538.tmp
Adware:Adware/WinTools No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\Temp\~828562.tmp

I cannot delete the two WinTools entries above in either normal or safe mode. Any suggestions?

Please delete your temporary files. Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start --->My Computer)
You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the
bottom of the fly out window. One the very first tab (General) you will see a button labeled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.
Make sure the following are checked:
Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Now click "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", "Scheduled Tasks" and delete all tasks scheduled that you haven't set yourself.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.
Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.
Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

Reboot normally and post a new log.
