I upgraded my operating system to OSX 10.3.9 about six months ago.
For all the years I've had a mac, i've happily used the Backup program that came with my original software to backup all my files, photos, music, onto an external drive.
Recently I noticed that the Backup program had somehow automatically upgraded from version 1.1 to version 3.1 and as far as I can tell, the upgraded version will only work in conjunction with a .mac account (which costs about $100/yr after the "free trial").
I'm rather irritated that apple seems to be forcing me to pay for something which previously was part of the basic software package.
I tried to remove the later version (3.1) , and re-install the version i had before (1.1) but the install would not allow me to put it on my hardrive.
My questions: is there a way to use versions 3.1 or 2.1 without having a .mac account?
is there another program out there that i could install to manage backing up my files to an external drive?
is there a way to install the old version (1.1) ?

Thank you very much for any help.
