[m_patient]

So far, i've done Spybot, Reg. Checkup, and attempted many FAILED installations of Ad-aware...and so now i'm here.

When i finally found the root of some of my road blocks, I tried running REGEDIT and got this error:

c:\windows\system32\cmd.com
NTVDM has encountered an illegal action
cs:d232 IP:26d2 OP: ff ff 00 00 00

press 'close' to terminate.


.....so then, i try opening up just plain old cmd, and got the same error.

Please download ewido anti-malware it is a free version of the program.

• Install ewido anti-malware
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will now open to the main screen.
• When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  
• You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
• Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close ewido anti-malware.

Reboot and rescan with HJT, then post the Ewido report and the fresh HJT log here for me please.

I also wanted to mention that Mic. WOrd freezes the machine forcing me to manually power down. If you try and end the process trees, or reboot normally it just makes it worse.

Hi There

The problem is that you have at some time picked up some malware which has managed to hide itself very well and has hijacked some processes, hence the problems with regedit and cmd commands. Thankfully I have dealt with a couple of these now and have a fair bet where it is hiding. When you get the error window, does it say something like "16 bit msdos subsystem error" or similar?

ok lets track this thing down.

1. Boot into safe mode
Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

2. Complete Uninstall list
Open HijackThis.
Click on "Open Misc Tools Section"
Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:

• List all minor sections(Full)
• List Empty Sections(Complete)

Click "Generate StartupList Log".
Click "Yes" at the prompt

It will produce a report which you should save to your desktop as a .txt file.

Reboot into normal windows and post the report here for me please.

Download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU)

[Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

Next to the 'scriptfile to execute'-window you'll see a little icon. When you click that icon, a little window will open that says: 'Please enter the full URL to the script you want to execute'
In the field, copy and paste next URL:

http://metallica.gee.../p2pnetwork.bfu

Press execute and let it do it’s job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.


Reboot and rescan with HJT and post the log here for me as well as details of any problems you rncountered.
