hi my m8 has just built a pc he has an msi max 648 mobo socket 478,80 gig hdd, 2.8 ghz celeron processor, an fx500 graphics which he took out of his dell pc along with a stick of ram 256 but when we plug the hdd into the ide and the drives nothing happens and yet when you take the IDEs out the hdd spins and the drives open, help would be much appreciated. thanks

Check the jumpers on your drives. On a ribbon cable the end of the cable should be hooked to the hard drive and the jumpers on the drive set to CS(cable select), or MA(master). The middle connector should be connected to a cdrom drive with the drives jumper set to SL(slave) or CS( cable select).

Have you tried with just the HD connected? Can you get into the bios(delete key usually at startup)and see if the HD is there? Check to see if IDE is enabled in the bios also. It could be the HD is dead. Any old working HD's laying around that you could try? A longshot is a dead motherboard IDE connector.
