Hey guys, this is my last resort cause i don't know what else to do. I've been trying to remove this for 2 days, i've used various spyware removal programs, and it just comes back. I have no idea how i got it, i haven't had a virus/spyware problem in years. It seems like the dll renames itself everytime i think it's gone. Also, it has been making my desktop, icons, and toolbar disappear and just showing the background until i restart. I have windows 98 ME, I tried vundofixer and it gave me a run time error 53, which i've read is because it doesn't work in win98. I would appreciate your help very much.

Hi SisterPsychosis and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.



We are going to boot in DOS
  • Click the Start button
  • Select Shut Down
  • Select Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode
  • Click the Yes button
When in DOS...

Type:

del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EFCCA.DLL

Then, hit Enter.

Make sure it is entered exactly as above!

Then please reboot your computer into normal mode. Run HijackThis. Place a check next to the following item and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: DosSpecFolder Object - {3E1BEA96-02D9-4992-B508-9B51819D9D86} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\EFCCA.DLL

Rescan with HiJackThis and post a new log please.

sorry it took so long to respond. i'm not sure if it worked yet, we'll see. there was still an instance of rundll in my task manager when i restarted. thanks so much for your help so far. if it is gone, what can i do to prevent from getting it again?

1. You appear to be missing one important program on that computer: An antivirus.
You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer.
I suggest AVG - it's free! :whistling:

AVG Free AntiVirus


2. It is important that you also use a software firewall, to prevent unauthorised traffic both out of and into your computer.
Your log doesn't show a firewall running. If you have disabled it, please re-enable it.
If you do not have a firewall installed, please download and install : Zone Alarm. It is the one I have on my system and works fine for me.
It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time.


3.
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
    . Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.

thank you sososo much, everything seems to be back to normal, and theres no other malware problems that i'm aware of. i downloaded and installed AVG, but when i tried to install zonealarm, i recieved an error that says "validation failed for C:\windows\temp\vsinit.dll. you probably are missing a necessary root certificate." and at the top it says "C:\windows\temp\glbb281.tmp"

so, i don't know what to do about that.

A. Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note:In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select
    • "Delete on Reboot
    • Then click on the "All Files" button if there are more than 1 file to delete.
  • Please copy the file path(s) below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

    C:\windows\temp\glbb281.tmp


  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.


After the reboot, please run another HJT scan and post the log.

i did the killbox thing, and then tried to install zonealarm, same message but with a new tmp file, so i redid killbox with the new file, restarted, looked in my temp folder, no files were there, then tried to install zonealarm again and it created a new tmp file. thanks for all your help! you're awesome.

That error message appears to be related to their new 64-bit version which surely won't work on a Windows 98 system.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect Show hidden files and folders.
  • Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

2. Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
