I have spent the last week trying to fix problems with my computer, utilizing your site for reference. Despite my username, I pride myself on usually being able to work around various problems using self helps. If my data seems lengthy, I am trying to give you as much information as possible as there may be multiple problems.

I run XP Professional which was updated from ME about a year ago. I started having the Dr. Watson Postmortme Debugger issues after updating Windows and trying to run Spybot. It was only after the update that I even knew about Dr. Watson and probably would not have concerned myself except that I was (and still am) unable to access Windows Explorer or My Computer or Control Panel.

I arguably had spyware problems as well as trojan problems, but having followed the advice in the ditto post of Aug 10, 2004 and the advice from Efwis relating to the Win32.TrojanDownloader.Agent.a1 I am fairly confident that I have removed the virus/trojans (which were multiple and pervasive).

The only other error message I have not yet solved is the following error and I include it only to be thorough. I have not reloaded the dll file as it took me a while to locate my Windows update disks and I have to research how to restore the file from the cab folder. That error is: "The application or dll c:\windows\sdkkk32.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this agains yur installation diskette."

I have run Spybot ver. 1.3
Trojan Hunter 4.2
CleanUp!
CWShredder 2.11
Ad-Aware
and the virus scan from Computer Associates

Some I had to run in Safe mode because it is the only place I could access Explorer. Once I was certain where the .exe files were located, I also then ran them from my regular desktop using the run command from the Start Menu. That is also how I have to run HiJack This and enclosed is my log.

You have had numerous posts about this problem recently and am hoping someone will come up with an answer. My guess is the Malicious Software Removal Tool which came with the Windows Upgrades, but since I can't access the add/remove programs I couldn't uninstall it.

By the way, I access the internet through my Yahoo Browser. Programs which force the access through IE (looking for updates, etc.) cause IE to close with the sorry for the inconvenience message (or some such language).

The end of the log has a file listed which came up as a problem in one of the Ad-Aware scans (which it was unable to fix) and which led me to the info to download Trojan Hunter. It relates to APIQC.EXE which also shows up in taskmanager when I look for the Dr. Watson problem.

Like other users, I was ending one (sometimes out of three) drwatson32.exe's that were running as a way to release my screen. Now after all the trojan and virus removal I just get a blank blue screen for about 8 seconds and then my desktop comes back -- until I try to access Explorer or My Computer, etc., etc., etc.

Help! Please! Please!

Hi VoiceMajor

Welcome to geekstogo ;)

You have a nasty About:Blank infection. This fix requires several tools that need to be downloaded. Please download these now, we will run them later.

1) About:Buster - Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder 2.11 - Download it and save it to your desktop.
4) Ad-Aware - Download, install, and update.

Enable hidden files and folders: Be sure you're able to Enable hidden files and folders:

During the fix do NOT connect to the internet. Unless you can memorize these instructions, it would be a good idea to print them out.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run AboutBuster
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan
AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: Fix button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run CleanUp
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
1. If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
2. After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
3. Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
4. Once the definitions have been updated:
5. Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
* Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
* Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is grayed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
o "Automatically save logfile"
o Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
o Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
o Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
* Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
* Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
* Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
* Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
* Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
* Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
* Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
* Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
* Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
* Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
* Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
o "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
o "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
o "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
* Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
o "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
o "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
o "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
o "Delete quarantined objects after restoring"
* Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
* Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
* Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
* Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
6. Close all programs except ad-aware.
7. Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
8. Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
9. After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.

Run HJT, close any open windows, and fix the following items (if they are still there):

First of all, thank you. Most of what you suggested I had already tried following the advice of other staff members as I noted in my original post. The exception, of course, is the HijackThis utility and log and I realize now since each computer is unique, you need to log to assist individual members.

I ran AboutBuster, CWShredder, Cleanup and AdAware all which came up clean in Safe Mode with no new problems. I fixed the items you identified in my HighJackThis Log and theywere all still present. (I presume these relate to registery entries - but you can explain that in more detail later). I did not locate any of the files you identified for deletion. One file came close, there was a file C:\INSTALL.HTM, but since it was not C:\INSTALL.CAB I did not remove it.

When I ran housecall, I received the prompt about whether I wanted to replace newer files with older ones and chose not to (which may have been the wrong choice). It identified 124 infected files all listed as Non Cleanable. Most had the name TROJ AGEN.RK, MQ, MP; TROF CHOPENOZ.B; TROJ IEFEATS.O; TROJ DLOADER, etc. It included Windows Media Player as in infected file. I was not able to create a list of all the file.

ActiveScan 5.02.00 found 194 infected files and disinfected 35 of those. I do not know how thows were infected.

I ran Trojan Hunter (at the suggestion of one of your other team members) prior to posting my original log and have TrojanHunter Guard enabled so I am a little surprised so many infections are still on my computer.

The Dr. Watson Debugger issue is still the same as I had to open the log files through notebook and paste them and could not access them through Windows Explorer or My Computer.

The AboutBuster log is:

Now close all windows and start this fix.

Please set your system to show all files; see here for how to do this if you're unsure.

Close all programs down, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against the following items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {D4A99041-BBC8-A963-8327-6E17563E936B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlid32.dll

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 6Q'8) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\apiqg.exe

Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: see here if you don't know how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\atlid32.dll<--Delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\crvg32.exe<--Delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\apiqg.exe<--Delete this file

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we'll take another look.

Thanks Thatman:

I followed your most recent instructions with the following caveats:

1. I couldn't access control panel in normal mode so had to access the Administrative tools in Safe Mode.

I also had to uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files" in Safe Mode. I always have my computer set to show hidden files and folders but did not know about the protected operating system files. I assume that is an XP addition.

I rebooted in regular mode and fixed the entries in HiJackThis without any problems.

I went back to Safe Mode and removed two of the files. I was not able to find C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ATLID32.DLL.

When I rebooted into normal mode I received the error message: ERROR: WINDOWS CANNOT FIND C:\WINDOWS\APIQG.EXE. MAKE SURE YOU TYPED THE NAME CORRECTLY, AND THEN TRY AGAIN. TO SEARCH FOR A FILE, CLICK THE START BUTTON AND CLICK SEARCH. I closed the error message and everything loaded.

I ran a new Hijack This log which shows:

I have not yet double checked whether I could access Explorer. Even if I can, how do I get rid of all the trojans found in the virus scans?

You have been so helpful. I learn more each time.

Hi VoiceMajor

Welcome to geekstogo

I know your going to call me all the names you can think off, but we need to do this.

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please download and install these programs - don't run them yet!!

Please download and unzip
About:Buster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.
Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop. Use either link below:
http://computercops....ownload&id=3002
http://www.mytechsup...rviceremove.zip

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.ne...CWSshtreder.exe

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

For anyone using Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigha...ds/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Here's the fix:

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 6Q_'8) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\apiqg.exe (file missing)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you dont find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into SafeMode. <---MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipbr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\addxf.exe

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.

4. CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E37F1F60-DC70-4779-94BF-704CB856B11A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipbr.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [addxf.exe] C:\WINDOWS\addxf.exe
O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 6Q_'8) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\apiqg.exe (file missing)

5. Delete the following files if present:
If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipbr.dll <--Delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\addxf.exe <--Delete this file

(and any other files with the same name that end in .dll, .exe or .dat, you may find them right next to each other, example - appsw.exe, appsw.dll, appsw.dat)

6. Run AboutBuster . This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report (copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file) and post a copy back here when you are done with all the steps.

7. Scan with AdAware and let it remove any bad files found.

8. Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

9. Double click on the cwsserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

10. Run CW-Shredder - Hit the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

11. Reboot into normal mode.

12. Download the Hoster from here http://members.aol.c...bee/hoster.zip. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

13. Download and run this online virus scan:
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Make sure you check "AutoClean"

Then reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log to see how we did.

I have printed out the directions and will begin to process in about 1 hour as I have an errand to run. However, any recommendations on how to get around the fact that I can't use Windows Explorer in regular mode. That means I have to do the downloads in regular, where I can access the Internet, then to safe mode to unzip and create folders if necessary because I can't get into either My Computer, Control Panel or Explorer.

Also, should I uninstall About:Buster (which I installed on Saturday, Feb. 26) Ad-Aware (ditto) CW-Shredder (ditto) and reinstall them or just reinstall over them. I have tried updating About:Buster and Ad-Aware as early as last night when I followed your details in Post #2.

Finally, I'm not calling you any names, but am so - sooo- grateful for your help. Just so you know, since my first PC in 1986, whenever I have had to resort to tech support (and it is rare because I take care of my machines) I always have a difficult problem that takes time to work out.

Thanks again.

The Run: Windows Explorer gives me the Dr. Watson Error message.

Using browse from Run and accessing c:\windows\explorer.exe gives me the dreaded blue screen.

I'll try to work around as best I can. I think I can access the progams using the Run Browse command. I am not sure about step 2. of your instructions where you reboot into . I assume I should keep my dsl connection open during all these procedures.

Effwis: Thanks. I'll take all the help I can get.

No I did not save it as I ran it last night before I went to bed and had my spouse write down the details and shut down the machine after it was done. I will rerun it.

I had to unzip the files for the cwsserviceremove and xphidden in safe mode. They are on my desktop. Other than that I have not started the steps in your post #6. I will run Panda first which may take some time. I assume I should wait for you to review the report before I start #6. If not, let me know and what about my question to step no. 2?

Unfortunately, I do not know how to execute Step 2, i.e., How do you "Reboot into SafeMode.[url<.

Can you help?

Hi VoiceMajor

Sorry my fault

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

ThatMan:

I have been through the steps of #6 and can claim some success as I was able to access both Windows Explorer and My Computer after the last reboot. Thanks for getting me this far.

I am still concerned about several open issues so I will go through the steps to describe what did or did not happen.

My confusion with Step #2 was beacuse I did not understand that the "url" listed was merely a reference to explain how to open in safe mode. I thought the instructions were to somehow reboot into the symantec site in order to access some type of trojan or virus fix. I've been in Safe Mode so much lately - it was the only way I was able to backup my data before I started messing with my machine.

I did not locate either of the files in step 3 or 5, i.e., ipbr.dll or addxf.exe. Neither did the line appear in Hijack This for the addxf.exe file.

I didn't find anything in the AboutBuster. I have attached the text file of the results. AdAware (using the custom settings from before) came up with 13 negligle objects which I removed.

There were no fixes for step 9 in the CW-Shredder.

Finally in step 13, I could not find any Autoclean to check or uncheck. At the end of the scan Housecall found 97 viruses and when I asked it to "Clean" them they came up uncleanable. I was not able to safe a file of the results, but did print one out. They are mostly TROJ_CHOPENOZ.B and TROJ_AGENT viruses.

Did you check the Panda Log?

I have run and am posting the new Hijack This Log.

How do I get rid of the viruses and where do I go from here?
