Hey all,

I have an external IDE drive enclosure kicking around here and I want to use it to add some storage to my laptop, but I'm having trouble sorting out all the interface types for hard drives and figuring out what will actually work with it.

The enclosure is a Vantec Nexstar-2 NST-525U2. The most detailed specs I can find in the manual just say "IDE interface."

I'm looking at a "Maxtor Ultra16 PATA" 250GB hard drive right now because it's on sale at Futureshop.

Is this drive compatible with my enclosure?

From what I gathered online, ATA 100 and higher have an IDE cable with more pins, but my enclosure doesn't specify what type of IDE it has.

Thanks.

Heres a website on ATA and IDE. I really don't think you have to woory about this. My WD 120 G ata100 drive in an enclosure runs slightly slower than the internal drives. It really don't matter since i use the external drive for backups.

Sleek and stylish, the NexStar 2 External 3.5” Hard Drive Enclosure is a great way to upgrade any internal 3.5” hard drive into an external storage solution.

With the Vantec NexStar 2 External 5.25” Enclosure, you can easily add any 5.25” IDE Device to your existing system.
