I'm running windows ME and keep getting the following error message at startup:

Windows Protection Error. You will need to restart your computer.
System Halted.

After shutting down (from power source), the compter wants to start in SAFE mode.

I just installed a new RCA modem and driver. Could this be the issue? How do I trouble shoot this?

Thanks!

Hi SteveB9...

Does the machine start in Safe Mode?

Hi Wannabe -

Yes, it will start in safe mode, but will also allow me to start in normal mode. This seems to be an intermittent problem, as the computer started in normal mode this morning, no warning about a protection error.

The first thing I would do is check for updated drivers for the modem.

Thanks, wannabe1. Will do.

Thanks for your help. I'll be back if the problem persists.
