Hi,
HP stores a copy of OS on a seperate partition on the hd the owner is responsible for creating cd's to restore the OS, instructions are in the manual about this. It is possible to recover the OS from that partition of the hd witch you have tried but for some reason won't work.
If the cd's were created then use them to reinstall if not then contact HP, with any luck and still in warrenty they will supply the disks.
If not then you will have to purchase the OS.

Thanks for the reply. I ended up using an instal disk from another computer that he no longer uses. His computer was extremely infested with viruses and spyware. Many, many files were corrupt and unrecoverable. I suspect that his recovery drive was also effected by the viruses and that is probably why it didnt work.

Yea that is pretty much what usually happens and why it is important with hp and some compaq computers to make the disk's.
