because some email address I don't recognize and I know i didn't add them began to appear on my contact list...

I havent heard of any security issues with gmail, are you sure you havent emailed and forgotten or recieved an email from the new adresses, its also possible someone else is using your email account.

i find that if you check who the email is sent to in the more options you find that it might not be your exact email address or it might just be someone's mistake in typing who the message goes to.
