you cant re-store the system without a disk. With final cut pro if you can find a unistall burn it to a disk.
id call apple and ask for a cd.

ask and see if you can get the cds back if he has them or call apple if still in apple care or wait about 6 mo. untill the next version of mac come out and buy it.

That's right. You can only install the OS if you have the original restore disk or if you go buy a version of OS X. I would just go out and buy one. I also have a G4 and I use 10.4.11 which works great. Anything above that is processor hungry. Give us some specs for your machine.
