I have a mac G4 that I am not very knowledgable about -- i am learning more and more each day. I inherited it from a friend who has a lot of stuff on it. It is having some problems, and I would like to start almost from scratch -- however I do not have the OS X disk and it originally came with OS 9 and the disk no longer exists. I also have final cut pro with the same situation but do not want to lose it. any body willing to help. I am computer savvy but it is taking life out of me trying to learn my mac legs on my own.

you cant re-store the system without a disk. With final cut pro if you can find a unistall burn it to a disk.

id call apple and ask for a cd.

ask and see if you can get the cds back if he has them or call apple if still in apple care or wait about 6 mo. untill the next version of mac come out and buy it.

(you won't regret upgrading unless your on a budget)

what are the problems?

That's right. You can only install the OS if you have the original restore disk or if you go buy a version of OS X. I would just go out and buy one. I also have a G4 and I use 10.4.11 which works great. Anything above that is processor hungry. Give us some specs for your machine. :)
