It should go as a usual install, you don't need anything which says format, if you see that, restart the PC

As far as I know, there was no pre-built in software, I had the PC built and I loaded in the antivirus myself

I have no idea what they mean by config program that came with it - it was built for me !!

To disable virus detection software on your computer you may need to remove the lines that start the program from your Autoexec.bat or config.sys.files.

After you have disabled the virus detection restart your computer then run setup again

Yeah right and it will work of course - NOT !!

I did try disabling antivirus and firewall directly but that did not let the win98 disc process work.

I did disable all symantec stuff in msconfig then restarted the rubbish machine but again it did not let the process work.

Either way I still got the same error message.
I am getting a stonking headache and the nearest brickwall is at risk from a serious pounding which would serve to escalate headache to migraine.

I would be straight down to PC World to ask for a replacement 98SE CD, if they damaged yours, they cannot hand you something they concocted

They have left you with a PC you are unable to do anything with

If you do get this to run, what happens next time it throws a wobbler

If you have citizens advice where you are, ask them the position

I tried that but PC World refused to acknowledge that the disc became damaged in their care and I had no way to prove it was perfectly ok before i handed it to them so it was a stalemate and they kept saying the 98se was an upgrade so they `did me a favour` by installing it which again reduced the strength of my argument apparently - the CAB at the time felt I would not get anywhere worthwhile with it.

I did do that as per my previous post [ sorry if I didnt explain properly ] and it still gave the same error message

edited to add : I did think about uninstalling Norton [ again ] but I would lose the go-back as well so I would be very worried about what would happen to all my stuff on the PC if things went wrong - I do have some things backed up onto CDs but I could not get everything on and I`ll be gutted to lose stuff which has happened in the past from having reformats done [ notably at PC world when they messed up with the disc - no suprise there then ! ]

Boot the PC and keep tapping the delete key until it enters set up, look for virus scan there, some have inbuilt scans and it could be referring to that, if you change anything, press F10 to save and type Y to confirm

If you use a free antivirus programme, or have the installation CD and product key for a paid for one, uninstall it

An update : A friends hubby is very PC techie so she told him the problems I was having [ I had no idea he is so PC savvy ! ], and the things tried so far. He rang this evening and talked me through a few checks then suggested a cheat to try [ as I have Go-Back to undo anything problematic ! ] which would enable booting up without me having to do the step by step boot at least. We changed the name of the symtdi.vxd [ just by one letter ] to see if it would boot ok and to see if any other problems start happening as a result [ particular eye to be kept on Norton ].

So far so good, but I will be monitoring for new odd behaviours if any appear. We also talked about me getting a separate external HD [ which the system will support apparently ] then perhaps either copying everything on to it for safekeeping then doing a wipe and reinstall or even making the new drive the primary and installing windows to that without disrupting everything else - he is going to think more about that possibility first though, as it was just a vague idea so he needs to consider potential problems it might cause first [ any input appreciated please !! ], but for the next few days its just a case of seeing if stopping the machine recognising the vxd concerned has sorted the annoying blue screen issues or not and making sure it does`nt cause other issues or if it makes no difference at all in which case I will have identified the wrong culprit [ but I`m pretty sure it has been the main factor ].

Any thoughts / comments / things I should particularly look out for ? [already know to see if it causes Norton any probs when it scans and gets updates, but I use yahoo for my emails which are scanned by them as well so a bit of extra cover there hopefully and I`m very carefull about attachments ].

I will keep you posted as well of course as the help and suggestions here so far meant I have done so many tests etc it gave my friends hubby loads of info to consider when looking for options of what else to try as well, so thank you for all that help of course and I will post again in a few days to let you know how it has been doing
