I've got an old e mac that my uncle was throwing away. i never used a mac before so i figured i'd start with this one and learn the ways of the mac. so far i don't see what the big deal is with macs, this thing blows. anyway it's got os 8. 5. 1 a g3 333 mhz prossesor ati graphics card no fire wire no dvd rom. i want to install os x, is this possible on this old mac? if not what is the latest os i can put on it? i want to atleast be able to surf the net on this thing and i can't even update my browser because every [bleep] program i come across requires osx.

thanks for the help in advance, any and all thoughts on this subject is greatly appreciated.

Its a bit old for OSX, you might get away with OS9 but OS9 was deadly slow on faster imacs. I would leave it as is myself. OSX is the only apple OS ive even been able to stand i had to use OS 8 & 9 and some earlier ones on power macintoshed and they were all abismal. OSX is better but youll need better hardware.

should be ok for osx - better if you can up the memory a bit see what you have -[bleep] easy to do.
I have a G3 333Mhz that I just loaded osx on and it runs fine.

you wont be able to run mac os x 10.4.7 (tiger) cause there is no firewire and no dvd drives. you could run panther but not tiger. although trying to get ahold of panther legally would be difficult since you can only purchase tiger now
