Hello,

Can anyone help?

I'm running windows ME and am having huge problems shutting down. The screen will go into shutdown mode with a blank screen but doesn't actually power off. I have to restart my PC

Am also getting all sorts of error messages, such as msgrsv32 not responding, programs suddenly quitting, or the screen freezing in the middle of something.

Have followed steps 1-5 as asked, but couldn't complete online virus scan with either Trend Housecall or Pandasoftware as in both cases the screen blacked out.

The problems began when I lost all sound on my PC. On the advice of evesham.com technical support, I ran my Recovery disk, and lost Windows ME, which I had to reinstall via a boot disk, and my PC has never been the same since. Have installed a new soundcard which returned the sound.

Hope this is making sense to a kind soul out there who can lend me their expertise - I'd be so grateful. I'm not a computer whizz so go easy on the jargon!

Many thanks, Deb

Taking a second look and now....

What the heck is this?
SMART SHUTDOWN.EXE

Also, I see this:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE

When did this problem occur? After you visited Windows Update, maybe? I don't know what it is with this update, but I am seeing a lot of people have a lot of different problems after installing it.

Hello guys!

I got quite the same problem as u have, i'm running win98, that is very close to winMe, and problems for shut down, programs (mainly games but not only) crashing (and sometimes it leads to an automatic reset of the computer), and most annoying, the freeze at startup on the desktop.
I couldn't find solutions, so I format my HD just 2 days ago, and installed just a few programs, and at first it seemed to be better, but tonight it crashes again.

When it crashes to the blue screen of death, it usually says it's "0E error at adress...by the Vxd VMM(01)... " . Have you got that "VXD VMM" error message too?

I thought it was a rather similar problem, but if an admin don't think so, do move this post elsewhere. But please help me :tazz:

And for the "KB891711" you have as a running process, it's a funny joke of microsoft ;) : it's a critical update downloaded with windows update, because win update believes it is for Win98/Me/2K/XP.But if u look at the information page of this update on msn's data base, they say it's only for winXP, and not for 98 or Me. And that's the first time i see a critical update that appears in task manager ;) I dowloaded this file yesterday, and uninstalled it right away, so I think u can at least get rid of that file (add/remove programs) that is useless. there's info on it on the net.

That is not quite correct. It does not list Win98 because support for windows 98 is over (the product and support are discontinued), but Microsoft does still release critical updates and this does apply to windows 98...but, this fix seems to be causing random problems.

As for vmm32 vxd, that is a strange, recurring error .

Fixes range from rebuilding vmm32.vxd, to extracting the individual files it is supposed to address it and running each device driver separately.

The short story--vmm32.vxd is a composite virutal device that does the job of multiple drivers for basic systems

Some people swear extracting the individual files fixes all kinds of problems. Some people say rebuild it.

I've had luck both ways, but never on the same machine....sooo.

Here's how to rebuild

http://www.helpwithw...iles/vmm32.html

and here is the other method

Look here for this fix
Heading WIN98 VXD BUG

http://www.mdgx.com/98-3.htm

I've always advocated method 1, but I swear I actually had method two fix a problem that method one would not....go figure.

Hi Gerry,

Many thanks for your continuing help and for taking the time to check my log. Smart Shutdown.exe is a free program from slawdog.com that is meant to fix shutdown problems on all versions of Window. It was recommended on computing.net or similar. It worked sporadically on my PC but in the end made matters worse so I've just uninstalled it.

Have also uninstalled Windows Update KB891711 after your comments.

Re shutdown problems, in Selective Startup, clearing Load startup group items check box seems to have helped PC to close down more frequently but programs still take ages to close. Am carrying on with other options.

Grateful thanks and Happy Easter.

Thanks Gerryf man, I 'll try to do the 1) and if not working i'll try the 2)
The strange stuff is that it doesn't happen every time, it's a random error.

Again Thanks for the great job u're doing on that forum, helping poor little geek-apprentice like me ;)

I'll tell u of the results.

ok so I had no more blue screen with a vxd vmm error, despite i did not change anything to my computer, so I decided not to make anychange to that vmm stuff.
I still crash on desktop, but its another problem linked to lmouse.vxd, so i'd rather make a new topic on it.
thx anyway :tazz:
