hello yall. I gotta admit I've never built my own PC, nor actually had an upgrade in the better part of 6 years (using a very generous friends PC for the last two). All things come to an end, ignorance and lazyness must as well I suppose - so here's my tentative sketch out of my PC - if anyone has any feedback on it - would be much appreciated indeed.

What I'm lookin for are primarily possible compatibility issues. I am skeered of finding out my RAM hates my mobo, or that my CPU just got out of a turbulent relationship with my HD, etc.

Secondly, a few of these items are slightly more expensive than my wallet would ideally enjoy - particularly the MOBO, the cases, and the sound card. In these cases, I'd courteously ask for any kind of feedback regarding affordable alternatives - without sacrificing too much quality (stability and overall satisfaction is quite important to me).
if you've read this far, wow, thankye already - the list is as follows :

CPU
intel core 2 duo 6600 ($345)
- I want this...

MOBO
ASUS P5W DH Deluxe ($270)
- I'm a little more flexible here. I want a solid mobo that can support SLI (although I only have the coin for one GPU at the moment), will work well with the core 2, and will... well... not break? So basically, I know this is high end - any suggestions for something a little more affordable, but that would still do the job well?

GPU
BFG Geforce 7900GT ($270)
- BFG seems to have gotten positive reviews. Any reason I shouldnt go with them?

RAM
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM Unbuffered DDR2 675 ($260)
or
CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail ($260)

... to let my ignorance show - what exactly is the difference between 240 pin/ DDR2 675 VS 184 PIN / DDR 400
(i.e. why are they priced comparatively ... prices from newegg, btw)

SOUND
SB x-fi xtrememusic ($121)
(... I might go for the audigy instead, just to save loot)

Hard Drive
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s ($95)
(this seemed like a safe bet)

optical
Lite-On SHM-165H6S Dual Layer DVD±RW ($30)
(ditto)

Case
COOLER MASTER Mystique 631 RC-631-KKN1-GP Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case ($100)
or
Thermaltake Eureka VC8000BWA Black Chassis : 1.0mm all aluminum Front bezel : Aluminum ATX Full Tower Computer Case ($159)

(( this was by far the most frustrating piece to look for. I want something that is both well cooled, user-friendly, and quiet (like everyone, I guess) - problem is, relatively few cases seem to fit the bill - feedback would REALLY be appreciated

was also thinking of the Antec p150 - but heard very nasty things about their built in PSU))

PSU
PC Power & Cooling 510 SLI-PFC ATX12V 510W Continuous @ 50°C Power Supply 90 ($189)
ENERMAX Liberty ELT500AWT ATX12V 500W Power Supply 90V~265V (Auto Adjusted) ($109)

(neither of the above cases (sides the antec) come with PSU's)

could also really use some feedback on this particular section. I'd like something that could eventually run dual 7900GT's in SLI in addition to the rest, but really... just want something that won't stop running after a week, or month, or day, like however many horror stories people post on newegg haha.

thas bout it. If anyones got any kind of input, id be only too glad to hear it. peace, and thanks in advance.

I have another question that occurred to me
one of the cases I'm thinkin of getting - the Antec p150 comes with a 120mm fan, and has two 90mm slots

I understand some 90mm fans are intended for CPU cooling, and some for case cooling - are they interchangeable in any way?

like, I was looking at the ARCTIC COOLING Super Silent 4 fan/heatsink piece - but it seems to be designated mostly for CPU's. would it be possible to rig it to the case slot?

as a bit of a followup - does ayone know any good 90mm case fans? quiet/yet/cool ;P ?
i was lookin at a kingwin 90mm case designed piece

thanks

Oh I just keep comin... :whistling:

...

Upon perusing the forums (and my wallet), I've begun wondering whether SLI might not be overkill for my intents and purposes. Can anyone suggest a rock solid MOBO that would work nicely with the core 2 as well as high grade corsair RAM?
