I am working on my uncles computer, did a needed update (he hadn't done one since 99) on restart Norton found a virus then required a restart, this time got a blue screen with a message that Explorer caused a gerneral protection fault in module CM8330SB.drv. I found CM830SB on C-Media web site but each time I
try to start the computer it stalls at the window cloud screen, when I hit Ctrl-Alt-Dlt
I get Explorer not responding, and Mstask not responding. HELP HELP HELP!!!!!

Since that is a driver, load into safe mode (tap F8 key while memory counts up).

You will have better lucj if you install the complete driver, rather than the single file.

well I did a safe mode start and actually found the driver file CM8330SB.drv on the computer with all the others in the folder associated with the sound blaster. But couldn't get the computer to recognize the file or driver on the floppy to up date the info. Soooo I ran a scan disk, defrag and cleaned up the files thinking that might help but on reboot I still get the blue sky and clouds with the hour glass continually running. When I do ctrl-alt-del I get "explorer not responding, Mmtask not responding" and Kb891711 That is all that is running at that time. If I wait I get a message that indicated Explorer has made an invalid error, details indicate it is at the CM8330SB location
Before this happened I did a Win98(SE I believe) update, and updated Norton as well. Can't figure out what to do next. One MSwin search suggested I disable the hardware in safe mode and reboot normal yet still no response. I am baffled. I am not too techy but try my best. Any suggestions?

Works for me,...

RIght Click MY COMPUTER, choose PROPERTIES, choose DEVICE MANAGER, go to SOUND, VIdeo and Game controllers, and remove everything you have there.....Windows will check the c:\windows\inf folder and attempt to reload the drivers.
