Emsi Software, the security software specialists, announces another new release in their product range: a-squared Anti-Dialer 2.0. This anti-dialer tool protects you from unwanted modem connections that can be very expensive for the user. One too many clicks on “OK” in the Internet can create a big shock for you in the next telephone bill. The inexperienced Internet surfer has caught a so-called “Dialer”.
Along with serious offers that use a Dialer as a legal payment mechanism for newspaper articles, software or other types of information services, there are also criminal Dialers that can be installed without the knowledge of the user. These Dialer programs use the modem or ISDN card to make new telephone connections to expensive added-value service numbers.
a-squared Anti-Dialer 2.0 provides protection from such programs. The integrated scanner searches all drives for Dialer programs and the Background Guard monitors the behavior of active programs for Dialer activity. The a-squared Anti-Dialer produces an alarm as soon as a program dials a connection or modifies the dial-up settings. The discovered Dialer should first be immediately placed in quarantine, since some Dialers manipulate the computer to such an extent that it no longer functions correctly when the Dialer is removed. Only then should the Dialer be removed. The user interface is child’s play to operate and has the same style as the other Emsi Software products.
With ADSL access, the Dialer problem is now not as serious as it was 2-3 years ago. However, 20% of all computer users still surf using a modem connection and are thus still at risk. One cannot exclude the possibility that more VoIP Dialers will surface as more and more users switch to Internet telephony and the high cost premium service numbers become available for VoIP.
