I have a linux network at work that I'm in charged of. Yesterday a guy that works part time like 2 wks out of every month came in and tried to log on, but forgot his password. I went in as root and put in passwd ja22. ja22 is the users account. Typed in the new password and and error came up saying

RPC: Can't encode arguments
password is not changed on server
passwd: Failed preliminary check by password service.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong. I took a training class for this job and set up my own network and changed passwords with no problems.

The system has Linux 7.2.

Is the password long enough to be accepted? A 4 digit password is rather weak. I would expect a more informative message though, if that were the case.

:tazz: Andeh...
I don't think it's secure to post passwords and accounts on a discussion board. Then you might as well leave out the password check and let everybody in.
'A password' and 'his/her account' will probably suffice.
IMHO.

maybe some more information about passwd can be found using man or even passwd --help.

Good luck!

Hehe it definately sounds like it isn't long enough. Try changing to something a little longer. Like 6 characters.

By Default the minimum password length is 5 characters. This can be changed but is not recommended. Try a password at least 5 characters. You could get into the shadowed password files and change it manually to a shorter password, but we won't go there, as it can corrupt your entire user file.
